On reading slowly.

I’ve been trying to read books the way I used to read them before tests existed. Not for highlights. Not to extract a point.

It’s slower than I remembered. Also better.

Currently on the desk: an old copy of The Emperor of All Maladies, and a borrowed chemistry textbook that’s much heavier than it looks.

not a recommendation list. just what’s open right now.

Watching plates leave the kitchen.

Banquet shift last weekend was a wedding for two hundred. There’s a moment, about an hour in, when the kitchen door starts swinging in a kind of rhythm you didn’t notice it had.

I think about pressure a lot lately — the kind that makes things break, and the kind that makes them work.

This was the second kind.

A summer class, before summer.

Signed up for College Algebra this morning. The class starts in June and I’m equal parts excited and a little nervous — mostly because it’s the first time something on my schedule wasn’t already chosen for me.

Not because I’m in a rush to be ahead. Because I’m curious what it’s like to learn at a pace I set.

We’ll see.

More to come, slowly, as things happen.
